RTÉ2 +1 poised to go live

RTÉ's second timeshift channel is poised to go live, following test transmissions on Saorview.

RTÉ2 +1 is due to launch on terrestrial TV platform Saorview on channel 12 at 7pm on Tuesday 19th February 2019, according to test data picked up by Digital TV monitoring website

It follows a week after RTÉ One +1 expanded to a full-time service, ending its previous timeshift arrangement with RTÉJr, which limited its broadcasting hours.

The RTÉ2 +1 service is due to broadcast from 7pm on weeknights through to the end of the night's schedule, with extended hours at the weekend.  It will broadcast in standard definition on Saorview multiplex 2.

The new service will be available in those parts of Northern Ireland where a signal overspill from the Republic of Ireland exists. However, Freeview users in this area may find their receiver will allocate RTÉ2 +1 at a random number in the 800 channel range.

RTÉ's timeshift channels are not included on the special RTÉ relay service broadcast on Freeview to parts of Northern Ireland outside of the signal overspill area.

RTÉ was given ministerial approval to expand its timeshift provision, but Ireland's main commercial operator Virgin Media has objected to the expansion of RTÉ's linear channels.

The Irish public broadcaster has been very quiet about the changes, opting not to confirm launch date details despite reports in the Irish media and free-to-air testing on Saorview. RTÉ2 +1 is also launching on satellite (Saorsat first), with other platforms to follow.
