ITV4 nets free-to-air La Liga rights

Free-to-air coverage of La Liga is heading to ITV4 with immediate effect.

ITV has swooped on the rights, which have become available after original rightsholder Eleven Sports lost the exclusive rights to top flight Spanish football. Premier Sports now has a package of UK and Ireland pay TV rights, in a seperate deal announced in the last 24 hours.

Starting on Sunday with Levante v Real Madrid (7:40pm), weekly matches will be shown on ITV4, along with a midweek highlights programme.

The best of the action from La Liga, including games involving Spanish footballing giants such as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, will feature in ITV4’s coverage until the end of the season in May, when this particular deal runs out.

Previous free-to-access coverage of La Liga matches this season came courtesy of Eleven Sports and STV Player.

Niall Sloane, ITV Director of Sport, said:
This is good news for football fans who will be able to see on free to air television some of the world’s best players in action for some of the world’s biggest clubs in a league known for its high levels of skill and entertainment from now until the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Eleven Sports has remained silent about how the latest sports rights news will affect its service, which at this hour is still being marketed to subscribers as the home of La Liga.
