Less Freeview coverage for Sony Crime; TruTV axed

Sony has reduced coverage of its Crime channel and removed TruTV from most areas on Freeview.

At 1pm, Sony Crime Channel on Freeview channel 40 transferred to the local TV multiplex, piggybacking on the signal that carries local channels to a number of towns and cities across the UK.

With the move, Freeview coverage was cut from just over 90% of UK households to less than 70%.

Sony Crime Channel was launched last year as a replacement for True Crime on Freeview and Sony Channel on pay TV platforms with a mixture of crime-related drama alongside factual crime-themed programming.

Only viewers who can receive a local channel on either channel 7 or 8 can continue watching the channel following a full retune.

No TruTV - except in Manchester
Sony Crime has taken the bandwidth previously used for TruTV UK, which has been removed from Freeview channel 68, except in Manchester. TruTV UK was acquired by Sony in 2017 and its entertainment schedule has also become dominated by crime-related programming. In February 2018, TruTV's coverage on Freeview was cut.

The changes also affect platforms that piggyback on Freeview, including YouView (BT / TalkTalk / Plusnet), EE TV and Now TV Smart Box users.
