BBC Four to drop to Freeview channel 82 in Scotland

Viewers in Scotland will have to get used to a long scroll down the list to find BBC Four on Freeview from mid-February.

The BBC will make some technical changes to its terrestrial TV service across Scotland on 18th February 2019 to prepare for the launch of the new BBC Scotland channel, which launches on Sunday 24th February 2019.

The standard definition (SD) version of BBC Scotland will be given priority over BBC Four SD, with channel 9 being reallocated to BBC Scotland.

As a result, BBC Four SD will move down to channel 82 in Scotland, where it will be located behind Talking Pictures (channel 81).

Channel 82 is the highest ranking channel number that's currently available on Freeview on a UK-wide basis (although channel 51 is the highest ranking vacant number for Scotland).

In parts of the central belt of Scotland as well as in the Aberdeen area, the high definition version of BBC Four is also available on Freeview. This will continue to be broadcast on channel 106, where available, with BBC Scotland HD launching on channel 115.

The technical changes will also affect viewers in Scotland with a receiver from YouView, EE TV or the Now TV Smart Box, as these rely on the Freeview signal to pick up BBC and some other TV channels as part of a hybrid service that combines terrestrial TV with IPTV. YouView includes users of BT TV, TalkTalk TV and Plusnet TV.

There's no change to BBC Four's channel number on satellite and cable.
