Further Freeview channel shut downs announced

A number of viewers will see a reduction of Freeview channels in 2019 and early 2020 following a reconfiguration of frequencies.

Freeview services are being moved to new frequencies to enable new 5G services to launch. As a result, it has been confirmed that there will be a reduction of coverage of the multiplexes that currently carry channels including Quest HD, FreeSports, Al Jazeera HD, PBS America and BBC Four HD.

Beacon Hill transmitter, covering the Torbay area, will cease broadcasting these channels on 27th March 2019.

In June, Caradon Hill, serving the Cornwall/Devon border area, will also cease carrying the channels.

Between mid-2019 and early 2020, the channels will cease at Caldbeck (Carlisle and North Cumbria, Dumfries and Galloway), Fenham (Tyneside) and Tapton Hill (Sheffield) transmitters.

Viewers will be advised of the changes via the Freeview website ahead of the switch-off.

The exact channels that will be affected depends on whether broadcasters opt to move potentially affected channels to any remaining multiplex capacity prior to the switch-off in each area.

  • Updated 14:11 12/12/2018 with correction to Fenham's coverage area and at 19:14 following Digital UK clarification concerning the Caldbeck transmitter.
