Eleven Sports boss fights Saturday football blackout

The owner of Eleven Sports has vowed to continue broadcasting live football on Saturday afternoon, defying the long-standing TV blackout rules.

Eleven Sports has for the past two weeks broadcast live La Liga football during the hours when no live football coverage is permitted under FA rules, a rule originally designed to protect attendance numbers at football grounds.

Andrea Radrizzani says the rule should be "reconsidered" and has confirmed that Eleven Sports is talking to Serie A representatives about showing live Italian football during the blackout times, which run from 2:45pm to 5:15pm on Saturday.

According to a report in today's edition of The Times, Mr Radrizzani is frustrated that while betting sites and illegal pirate sites are streaming live football during this time, they, as legitimate rights holders are not permitted to. According to the newspaper, the Premier League has made a complaint to the FA.

Eleven Sports made its debut in the UK during the summer and is available online, via mobile apps and through Chromecast on regular TVs. It hasn't yet sealed any carriage deals with any traditional TV operator. It has the rights to cover games from a number of foreign football leagues, including Serie A and the Dutch Eredivise. Away from football, the broadcasters has rights to live golf and, from 2019, UFC.
