Virgin secures FreeSports HD

Virgin Media is to become the first platform operator to offer FreeSports in high definition.

FreeSports HD will launch on cable on Tuesday 25th September, in a move that takes the HD version of the channel behind the paywall.

It follows a carriage deal in the summer that secured the arrival FreeSports SD on Virgin Media, nearly a year the channel launched on satellite and Freeview. With the launch FreeSports HD replaces the SD version on channel 553.

During June and July, FreeSports HD was testing free-to-air on satellite, before it was abruptly pulled. Prior to this, FreeSports had told social media users of an impending HD launch on Sky and Freesat.

Financial terms of the carriage deal with Virgin Media have not been disclosed. Virgin Media did not want to comment further on the carriage arrangement.

FreeSports SD remains free-to-air as  normal across satellite and terrestrial platforms.
