Ideal World up for sale; reports that trading is suffering

Teleshopping channel Ideal World appears to be the latest retailer to be struggling.

The Peterborough-based Ideal Shopping Direct is up for sale, just three years after private equity firm Blackstone acquired the business, which runs a number of services across Freeview, Sky, Freesat and Virgin Media.

Local media reports that the 500 staff at the company face an uncertain future. Meanwhile, The Sunday Times Business section reported that the company could be sold by Blackstone for less than half the price it paid three years ago. It reported that trading had "suffered" recently.

Its chief executive Mike Hancox left the company at the end of May after a decade with the business.

Ideal World had been seeking success by tapping into the lucrative crafting market, with the growth of its Create and Craft channel, which faces competition from Hochanda, Sewing Quarter, Jewellery Maker and teleshopping giants QVC.

The company is the latest teleshopping provider to struggle in the last few years, with a number of shopping channels, including The Craft Channel and Shopping Nation failing in that time.

update 30/07/2018 Ideal World has been taken over by Auerlis, the German company that at one time owned Bid Shopping (Bid TV/Price Drop TV).
