Radio 1 to start the weekend a day early

BBC Radio 1 is to introduce a four-day week, with many weekend programmes now going out on a Friday.

From June, BBC Radio 1's Weekend Breakfast hosted by Dev & Alice Levine, will air from Friday to Sunday, with Nick Grimshaw continuing Monday-Thursday. Fellow Radio 1 Daytime presenters Clara Amfo and Greg James will also go down to four-day weeks.

The new Friday morning show (10am-1pm), will be called Radio 1’s Greatest Hits with Maya Jama, and will see Maya bring all the fun and energy of her Saturday show, to Fridays.

On Friday afternoon, Mollie King will be partnering up with Matt Edmondson on Friday afternoons (1-4pm) for her first ever permanent show on the station.

Ben Cooper (Controller, BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and Asian Network) said:
“The weekend will start here at Radio 1 on a Friday morning giving our young audience that feel good factor a day early. It’s our job at Radio 1 to reinvent the way young people listen to the radio, to disrupt traditional thinking and to look for new ways in which to grow audiences.”
