Post-Commonwealth Games: BBC Red Button HD closes down

The end of the Commonwealth Games has brought about the end of the BBC's HD Red Button service - for now.

The HD service utilised CBBC HD's downtime across satellite and terrestrial platforms, using bandwidth that has remained dormant since the removal of BBC Three HD from linear TV two years ago.

It provided viewers with an HD simulcast of the existing BBC RB 1 service from 9pm to 5:30am, with many of the live events from the Gold Coast, Australia, taking place during these hours due to the time difference.

From today, just the standard definition BBC RB 1 remains, although viewers with access to BBC Red Button+ or the BBC Sport App will continue to enjoy additional choice during selected events.

The BBC is yet to confirm its arrangements for Wimbledon, when the BBC Red Button service normally gains additional, temporary pop-up channels.
