BT Sport confirms new PPV channel

UPDATE | BT Sport has confirmed it is launching a pay-per-view channel.

The HD-only service "BT Sport Box Office" has been assigned Sky channel 494 and is due to appear on BT's own YouView-based TV platform, according to BT information. However, the telecoms giant hasn't yet divulged any further information about what the service will offer and how much an event might cost.

Test transmissions for the service had been spotted being broadcast on the Astra 2E satellite in recent days, where EPG data for the service was being transmitted. The encrypted channel is testing on the BT Sport HD transponder (Frequency 11386, Polarisation: Horizontal, FEC 8/9, Symbol Rate 29500 SID 53797).

The launch of a pay-per-view service comes nearly five years after BT Sport first launched as a linear TV service.

Meanwhile, the free-to-view BT Showcase channel, which has been carried on Freeview HD channel 115 since last May is being shut down. The last live broadcast on the channel was on 31st March 2018, and since Easter the L-bar with fixtures and results has been removed, with the channel now just showing a promotional loop. Billed programmes on the EPG have not been shown since the start of April. Under BT's new UEFA contract, it is no longer required to show Champions League and Europa League matches on a free-to-air basis, which has removed the raison d'ĂȘtre of the channel.
