Spike launch date announced

Channel 5 owner Viacom has announced the launch date for its new channel Spike TV UK, launching in April.

Spike TV confirmed on Twitter today it is launching on 15th April.

Headlining the new channel is cult US drama Breaking Bad. Spike will show all series. Other programme highlights include:

  •  Lip Sync Battle: The show is based on one of the most popular segments from Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show in the US. Two celebrities are pitted against each other to see who can lip sync pop songs better.
  •  Sons of Anarchy: US crime drama series
  •  Tattoo Disasters UK: based on the US show Tattoo Nightmares
  •  Olympus fantasy drama series

Spike has been confirmed as launching on all UK TV platforms, including Freeview, Freesat (141) and Sky (160). Notably absent is Virgin Media: distribution is subject to a carriage agreement (it had been previously reported that Viacom would be seeking distribution on all major TV platforms). On Freeview, VIVA will be shunted to provide sufficient bandwidth for Spike to launch. VIVA continues on satellite and cable full time as an all music channel.

The channel will be the first local version of Spike outside of North America.
