Changes to local DAB in Northampton, Herts, Beds and Bucks

Now Digital operates local DAB in Northants, Herts, Beds & Bucks
Local DAB services for Northamptonshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire are being split, leading to minor changes to the stations available in each area.

Until now the Northamptonshire local DAB multiplex has shared the same programming as the Herts, Beds and Bucks multiplex, which has led to BBC Radio Northampton being available down to the northern edges of London. Likewise, BBC Three Counties has been available into the south of the East Midlands.

The changes mean that listeners in each area will only see their local BBC station on their local DAB multiplex, although reception of both stations will continue in overlap areas.

Commercial stations Heart and Smooth will be able to broadcast separate local news and advertising for the two areas, reflecting what is already possible on FM and AM. The changes to the audio on these stations will, according to today's Ofcom approval of the plans, be on 15th February 2015.

A special "engineering channel" explaining the changes is on air until then. In Northamptonshire, BOB FM and MKFM will cease to be carried on the Northampton multiplex from 1st February 2015, but reception will be possible in parts of Northamptonshire where overspill reception from Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire is possible.

Connect FM and Sunrise will continue to be broadcast on both multiplexes.

*UPDATE: 10/02/2015: Changes to the multiplex are now delayed until 20/02/2015.
