Freesat's BBC One HD/SD swap in Northern Ireland

The first SD/HD swap on a BBC channel has taken place today on Freesat.

Viewers with Freesat HD in Northern Ireland will now be able to watch BBC One Northern Ireland HD on channel 101, with the standard definition version moved down to channel 108.

Elsewhere in the UK, BBC One's HD version remains on channel 108.

Theoretically, any of the main channels where there is an HD version covering the same region or nation as the SD version could swap, without being in breach of EPG rules which require TV platform operators to provide the relevant regional versions of the main 5 channels on the first five channel slots.

On Sky, UTV has already swapped its HD and SD channels, and BBC Two HD has swapped with BBC Two SD in England.

  1. Hope this 108 and 109 for BBC One and Two SD remnants is a temporary measure till All Regions are have HD Availability and ultimately the plan is to prefer the following of Single EPG Number - the RT (Russia Today) SD/HD (206) model. NHK World is HD Only Stream to an Western European audience (availability to Freesat/UK Audience) though SD do exist elsewhere around the Globe.

For HD Boxes BBC Three, Four, News and CBBC Cbeebies the SD channel should ultimately 'disappear'!
