Local Digital Radio to launch in South West Wales

Extra choice for DAB listeners in the South West corner of Wales
Local radio services will be added to DAB digital radio on Friday 30th August 2013 for listeners in most of Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Swansea Bay, with the new "Mid and West Wales" multiplex going live at just after midnight.

DAB multiplex operator MuxCo confirmed the launch details earlier today on its website. It will be the organisation's second local DAB multiplex serving parts of Wales, following the successful launch of a local DAB multiplex in North East Wales in April.

Ahead of the launch, MuxCo has been operating test transmissions on its assigned frequency (VHF Block 12D). Listeners will need to retune their DAB sets from Friday to gain access to the extra stations.

Stations on the new multiplex include four services from Town and Country Broadcasting: Radio Pembrokeshire, Radio Carmarthenshire, Nation Hits and Nation Radio, plus the two BBC stations for Wales and Real Radio Wales.

At launch, the multiplex will be broadcast from three transmitter sites: Carmel, Kilvey Hill and Preseli - sites that also house the main TV transmitters serving South West Wales. A further transmitter at Greenhill near Milford Haven is planned for 2014. Subject to the Government's forthcoming decision on any possible digital radio switchover, the multiplex will be expanded to cover Aberystwyth, Llandrindod Wells and Brecon, enabling the multiplex to fully live up to its name.

Swansea's Kilvey Hill transmitter will host both the existing Swansea multiplex alongside the new Mid and West Wales multiplex.

The new multiplex will offer listeners an extra choice of stations, including the return of Nation Radio and Nation Hits on DAB. Listeners lost access to these stations on DAB in July when the regional multiplex covering South Wales and Severn Estuary closed.

Real Radio Wales plus BBC Radio Wales and Radio Cymru will be duplicated on both multiplexes.
