Northampton DAB multiplex tests begin

DAB DIGITAL RADIOListeners in Northamptonshire have been able to hear the first test transmissions from the new local digital radio multiplex that will officially launch on the 28th March across the county.

Craig Steele confirmed to a516digital on Twitter that the test transmissions - broadcast from a transmitter at Kingsthorpe on VHF block 10C - are currently duplicating the sister multiplex serving Herts, Beds and Bucks, which launched earlier this year.

The test signal went off air this evening, but is expected to return in the coming days. Once officially launched, the Northamptonshire multiplex adds BBC Northampton to DAB alongside commercial stations already on the Herts, Beds and Bucks multiplex. These include Global Radio's Capital, Gold and Heart Four Counties networks, plus Connect FM and Milton Keynes community station MKFM

The Northamptonshire multiplex was first confirmed as launching within the first three months of 2013 back in November, when operator Arqiva confirmed a £6 million investment in expanding local digital radio services across parts of England. A new multiplex serving Derbyshire is scheduled to be the next Arqiva local multiplex to launch after Northamptonshire. It is expected on air before the end of the year.
