21/11/2012: Cumbria and SW Scotland Freeview retune

On Wednesday 21st November, it will be the turn of viewers in parts of Cumbria and South West Scotland to retune their Freeview receivers as a result of frequency changes to accommodate 4G mobile internet services. The event is the last to occur this year.

Over the past few days, pop up messages have appeared on ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 for viewers receiving their signal from an affected transmitter, advising of the imminent changes.

The changes will affect viewers who receive a reduced version of the Freeview service from a relay transmitter (i.e. without ITV3 and 4); services from the main transmitter at Caldbeck, which transmits the full range of Freeview channels, are not affected.

There will be two categories of affected viewers: viewers who need to retune and viewers who will temporarily lose some channels, but won't need to retune.

Viewers who receive their TV signal from the following relay transmitters will need to retune on Wednesday to regain any lost channels. Not all channels will be affected, but those that are will go off air at some point after midnight. By the estimated times listed below, next to the transmitter names, viewers should be able to retune.
  • Kendal (after 6am)
  • Whitehaven (after 6am)
  • Barskeoch Hill (after 11am) (HD Channels only)
  • Gosforth (after 11am)
  • Haltwhistle (after 11am)
  • Kendal Fell (after 11am)
  • Portpatrick (after 11am)
  • Sedbergh (after 11am)
  • St Bees (after 11am)
  • Thornhill (after 11am)
  • Workington (after 11am)
  • Ballantrae (after 3pm)
  • Creetown (after 3pm)
  • Grasmere (after 3pm)

Viewers who receive their service from the next set of relay transmitters will lose some, but not all channels but do not need to retune in order to regain channels. This is because the next set of relays listed rely on one of the above listed relays for a signal. Services should be restored by 3pm at the latest.
