Smooth to add seasonal service to Digital 1 DAB

Smooth Radio is to relaunch its Smooth Xmas station for another year on Thursday 1st November on the national Digital 1 DAB multiplex operated by Arqiva.

Ahead of the launch, technical changes have taken place on Digital 1 involving one of the test channels, which is expected to morph into Smooth Xmas on Thursday. The service is expected to be on air in mono with a bitrate of 64kbps. Smooth Xmas first made an appearance on Digital 1 this time last year.

This year numerous Smooth favourites will be hosting shows in the run up to December 25th, including The Overtones, Michael Buble, Joe McElderry and Donny Osmond. The station will remain on air until the end of Boxing Day.

This is the last year that Smooth Radio will be on air in its current form. Pending the outcome of the Competition Commission's review of Global Radio's takeover of Smooth owner GMG Radio, it is anticipated that Smooth Radio will either be refreshed and relaunched or fold into one of Global's existing radio brands, such as Gold.

Closures of regional multiplexes outside of London during 2013 also mean that there may be less capacity on Digital 1 to launch a temporary station this time next year, with services currently on the regional multiplexes looking at coverage on local multiplexes or national coverage via Digital 1.
