The change coincided with stage 1 of the digital switchover on Wednesday, 7th March 2012, when the feed supplying the Whitehawk Hill transmitter overlooking Brighton was changed.

The BBC's digital services are now aligned to the region based at Tunbridge Wells, thus ensuring that viewers on all digital platforms in Brighton and Hove receive the same regional variant.

Previously, satellite viewers with Brighton and Hove postcodes were "mapped" to BBC One South East, but other viewers received BBC South from Southampton, with "South Today" as the regional programme. Up to the changeover, stories from Brighton and Hove on South Today had been taken from the South East Today reporters in the area.

Analogue BBC One viewers in the Brighton and Hove area can continue watching South Today for a little while longer:
The analogue feed remains the same as from the Rowridge transmitter on the Isle of Wight until all analogue services are closed down just after midnight into Wednesday, 21st March. The final bulletin of South Today to be aired on BBC One analogue from Whitehawk Hill and its relays in the Brighton and Hove area will be the 22:25 bulletin on Tuesday, 20th March, just over 90 minutes before BBC One analogue is switched off for good.

Some viewers in Brighton and Hove may still be able to receive South Today via Freeview from either the Rowridge transmitter or Findon relay near Worthing, however this is expected to be a small minority of viewers. If you are in an area where you can pick up more than one regional service, one of the regional services may be found around channel 800 or 801 on your Freeview box or TV.

ITV1's regional service from ITV Meridian remains unchanged. BBC South East was the result of the splitting up of the old "Newsroom South East" region, which covered Oxford, London and Kent.

Previous reassignments of regions include: Berwick Upon Tweed: ITV region changed from Border to Tyne Tees  and Lincoln: BBC region changed from East Midlands to E Yorks/Lincs. Both of these reassignments occurred before digital switchover started in their respective areas.
