Discovery and Scripps to become one?

The two US factual and lifestyle media giants are in renewed talks over a merger.

Reports of a merger have surfaced through Reuters and The Wall Street Journal, which also suggests other parties are interested in a merger with Scripps Networks, possibly Channel 5 owner Viacom.

Discovery Communications is best known for its factual channels, and also as the owner of Eurosport and Quest. Scripps Networks Interactive operates lifestyle-based services including Food Network and Travel Channel, both available free-to-air in the UK.

The two media companies last discussed merger opportunities in 2014, but later abandoned the discussions. Scripps is reportedly seeking a tie-up with a larger company to gain a better negotiating position with cable and satellite companies.
