TalkSPORT bags enhanced EFL commentary rights

TalkSPORT has secured a comprehensive rights package to cover the English Football League from next season.

The commercial radio station, now under the control of Rupert Murdoch's News UK, will be able to broadcast exclusive live commentary of up to 110 EFL fixtures a season for the next three seasons, with no more than 92 Championship fixtures to be covered per season.

TalkSPORT will broadcast coverage across its main TalkSPORT station as well as digital-only TalkSPORT 2, available to around 3/4 of the UK on DAB. Elsewhere, TalkSPORT2 is available online and via mobile apps. The move will provide a further boost to the radio industry, who are working towards extending digital radio listening over the 50% mark.

Additionally, the broadcaster also has live and exclusive rights for all matches included within the EFL play-offs across all three divisions. Coverage will be completed with journalistic tie-ups with The Sun and The Times newspapers.

BBC Radio 5 Live will continue to have limited broadcast rights, with non-exclusive score flash updates across all three EFL divisions, the Carabao Cup and the Checkatrade Trophy, plus non-exclusive rights to transmit live coverage of Carabao Cup matches, alongside TalkSPORT.

The new deal with TalkSPORT means more income for the EFL. EFL chief executive Shaun Harvey said:
"The increase we have achieved for our clubs represents tangible progress in a difficult market place and I truly believe this is a deal that not only benefits the EFL and our clubs, but also provides the best possible solution for supporters, partners and broadcasters alike."
