BT to show Leicester City Champions League debut for free

UPDATE | After criticism of the way it broadcast free-to-air European football fixtures last season, BT is to offer coverage of Leicester City's debut in the UEFA Champions League group stages for free.

Leicester City's fixture against Belgian side Club Brugge will be shown from 7pm on Wednesday 14th September on the BT Showcase channel on Freeview channel 59.

At the beginning of September, BT originally said that Sky and Virgin would make the game available for all, but has since gone cagey on the matter. Virgin Media viewers have usually been able to see BT Sport freebies on a pop-up channel called BT Sport Free. The match will be available on BT Sport 2 on pay TV platforms.

On 15th September, BT will also broadcast free coverage from the UEFA Europa League, featuring Inter Milan playing Israeli side Hapoel Be’er Sheva from 8pm.

Last season, BT was heavily condemned for the way it was screening free Champions League and Europa League fixtures. BT had committed to screening a selection of games for free as part of a deal that saw one broadcaster take all the rights to all the games, ending the decades long coverage sharing between ITV and Sky. But BT frequently did not reveal which games, if any, would be broadcast until shortly before the event, and after TV listings guides had gone to press and did not make the majority of the games available on Sky.

BT has recently revamped its channel offering, rebranding BT Sport Europe to BT Sport 3, with European football no longer on just the one BT Sport channel.
