DAB pop-up for ABBA

Bauer Radio is using some of the free capacity on its DAB digital radio multiplexes for a six-week pop up music station celebrating the music of Swedish group ABBA, operated by its easy listening station Magic.

Magic ABBA is available on local DAB in London, Manchester, Birmingham,Teesside, Tyne & Wear, Humberside, Leeds, Edinburgh, Northern Ireland, Tayside, Inverness. In Manchester, where there isn't sufficient capacity on the main local DAB multiplex serving the area, the station is being carried on the Niocast trial multiplex, limiting reception mostly to listeners within the M60.

The station is broadcast in mono.

It's being operated in conjunction with Mamma Mia, the West End show inspired by the shows of ABBA.

Of the new pop-up station, the Creator/Producer of Mammia Mia! Judy Craymer said:
“It’s incredibly exciting to be working with Magic on this unique pop-up digital radio station featuring the music of ABBA and Mamma Mia! The songs of ABBA have always been irresistible and this is a fantastic celebration for both ABBA and Mamma Mia! as the musical enters its 18th year in London’s West End.”

Following last weekend's completion of the migration of some services from local DAB to the new Sound Digital (D2) multiplex, many multiplexes, with the exception of those covering the UK's largest cities, are currently carrying substantial amounts of spare capacity. Bauer Media has added Kiss Fresh and Absolute Classic Rock to fill slots on its multiplex network, which mostly covers northern England and central Scotland. It's not clear how the remaining local DAB capacity will be filled in the long-term.
