UTV rebrands as sale of TV assets completes

UTV Media is to become known as The Wireless Group PLC from 1st March, following the sale of its TV business to ITV.

The business, which holds various local and national radio licences across the UK and Ireland, will thus adopt the name of the company it originally acquired in 2005, when it bought TalkSPORT and a number of other stations in the UK.

Last year the company confirmed it would be getting a new name after ITV announced it would be retaining the UTV brand for the Channel 3 service in Northern Ireland and the new commercial TV channel in the Republic of Ireland. Of the former ITV regions, all but two are now owned by ITV plc.

The Wireless Group PLC is in the process of relaunching Virgin Radio and TalkRADIO in the UK, plus new offshoot station TalkSPORT2 as part of the new Sound Digital DAB multiplex in the coming weeks.
