Netflix arrives on Freesat Freetime boxes in phased roll-out

Freesat Freetime boxes have begun receiving a software update providing support for Netflix, giving some users the option to add premium movie and drama content in time for the holiday season.

The arrival of the internet service has been the subject of intense speculation ever since Freesat announced its new smart TV service in September 2012.

Since last Thursday (10th), the update enabling Netflix is being distributed on a phased basis by Freesat via the internet, and once it's been installed on boxes, Netflix will appear alongside other Freetime apps.

The software required for Netflix is version 3.00.18. Users can check their current software version in the 'system settings' menu, but must wait until the update is offered to their box if it hasn't yet arrived.

Freesat Freetime users who haven't yet got the software update also need to ensure that their box is always connected to the internet. As this is a phased roll-out, it will take a while for all boxes to receive the update.

In comparison, a Sky software update, released in April 2015 was scheduled to take until the end of June 2015 to reach all eligible users.

Older Freesat boxes (non Freetime) are not compatible with the new generation of smart TV apps, and will not get Netflix. Currently, Freesat Freetime boxes are only available from Humax, and include the HB-1000S, HB-1010S and HB1100S receivers.

Freetime combines Freesat's range of free-to-air satellite TV and radio services with a scroll-back guide integrating catch-up TV from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. Additional free and pay apps include BBC News, YouTube and Hopster.
