DAB Updates: November & December 2015

Crowdfunded local station NJoy Radio Cornwall has launched on local DAB in Cornwall.

The station, which launched on the 23rd November, is a music-led service aimed primarily at people aged 30-55 living in Cornwall. According to Ofcom, who approved the application to include the station on local DAB, speech content will be of "relevance to the area and demographic."

CAPITAL LIVERPOOL
Capital Liverpool willl replace Juice FM on the NE Wales and Cheshire multiplex (also known as the Wrexham, Chester and Liverpool multiplex on VHF Block 10D).  Details of what will happen to the current version of Capital on the Liverpool multiplex on VHF Block 11B remains to be seen.

DRAGON HITS
Triple Hits on the Somerset local DAB multiplex has re-branded itself and is now known as 100% Dragon Hits. More info...

LIKE RADIO
A new service launching for DAB listeners in Herefordshire and Worcestershire from 14th December.

MATRYOSHKA RADIO
This Russian music, news and entertainment station is now live on the London III DAB multiplex (effective 27/11/15)

NATION XMAS
Nation Xmas will broadcast on the Cardiff & Newport and Mid/West Wales multiplexes from 1-28th December.

NATION GOLD
Nation Gold replaces Nation Xmas on the Cardiff & Newport and Mid/West Wales multiplexes on 28th December.

OLDIES SUSSEX
This station replaces the current Smile Sussex service in Sussex from 11th January 2016.

RADIO MARSDEN XMAS
This station will be available on the Surrey DAB multiplex from 00:01 27th November - 23:59 on 26th December 2015.

SMOOTH XMAS
The station replaces Smooth Extra until 06:00 on 28th December on the National D1 multiplex.

UTV XMAS
UTV is launching three seasonal pop-up stations for listeners in Bradford/Huddersfield, Stoke and Swansea. Read more...

Coverage expansion
Plymouth
Local DAB services have moved to a new frequency, in a move which took place on 25th November. BBC Radio Devon and other local services on DAB have moved to VHF Block 12D and three new transmitters have been launched to improve coverage. A retune will be necessary for affected listeners. Sussex
Local DAB services in Sussex have moved to VHF Block 10B, in a move which took place on 9th December.

BBC - DAB expansion phase 4
The BBC is due to complete its latest phase of DAB coverage expansion for its national DAB multiplex (VHF Block 12B) in the coming months, slightly behind schedule. In the meantime, additional transmitters have been switched on. Details here...

Since this article was published on 12th December, details of further transmitters have been released:

  • Kingswear: bringing coverage to Dartmouth and surrounding areas
  • Leek: improving coverage in Leek and the Staffordshire Moorlands
  • St Erth Canons Town: improving coverage in St Erth and Hayle, Cornwall
  • Winchcombe: bringing new coverage to Winchcombe, Gloucestershire
  • Tenby: improving coverage in Tenby and surrounding areas of Pembrokeshire


Local DAB coverage continues elsewhere in the UK, including extra transmitters boosting coverage being switched on all the time. Coverage boosts are due to continue until the middle of next year.

  1. Interesting that nothing has been said about Xmas stations on DAB, makes me wonder IF any stations are going to be on at all. Smooth Extra might become Smooth Xmas, but with no announcement yet we will just have to wait.
