Yorkshire DAB multiplex closes

After twelve years, the regional tier of DAB digital radio in Yorkshire has come to end, following similar closedowns in other English regions in 2013.

Yorkshire DAB listeners to Capital, Gold, Heart, Smooth, Radio Yorkshire, UCB Gospel and Inspirational plus XFM are affected. Gold already pulled the plug on its service on the multiplex at the beginning of Monday.

Most stations appeared on local DAB multiplexes serving various parts of Yorkshire on the 19th June 2015, allowing listeners to retune to new frequencies and reset their presets.

However, the availability of some stations will vary, as not all stations will be broadcast on all local DAB multiplexes. Notably Radio Yorkshire will not be available in parts of Leeds and across most of South Yorkshire following the changes. Gold has disappeared from all but the Humberside multiplex, serving East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

The frequency used by the Yorkshire regional DAB multiplex (VHF Block 12A) will be reused by the Lincolnshire local DAB multiplex from September 2015. DAB in Yorkshire will be broadcast in two tiers from now on: national (BBC and commercial multiplexes) and local (with local multiplexes serving Bradford & Huddersfield, Humberside, Leeds, North Yorkshire and South Yorkshire).

In East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire (VHF Block 11B):
  • Capital, Smooth and Gold have moved to the Humberside multiplex, on the same DAB frequency carrying local station Viking.
  • Heart will not be available on DAB at the moment, but overspill reception from other areas might be possible in places.
  • Radio Yorkshire, XFM and UCB Gospel and Inspirational are no longer carried on DAB in the local area, although Radio Yorkshire may still be available in some areas via overspill reception from North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire (VHF Block 10C):
  • Capital, Smooth and Radio Yorkshire have moved to the North Yorkshire multiplex, on the same DAB frequency carrying BBC Radio York and Yorkshire Coast Radio.
  • Heart will not be available on DAB from the local DAB multiplex, but overspill reception from other areas might be possible in places.
  • Gold, XFM and UCB Gospel and Inspirational are no longer carried on DAB in the local area.

South Yorkshire (VHF Block 11C):
  • Capital, Heart and Smooth have moved to the South Yorkshire local DAB multiplex, on the same DAB frequency carrying Hallam.
  • Gold, Radio Yorkshire, XFM and UCB Gospel and Inspirational are no longer carried on DAB in the local area.

West Yorkshire  (Bradford & Huddersfield - VHF Block 11B; Leeds - VHF Block 12D):
  • Capital and Heart are available via both the Bradford & Huddersfield and Leeds local DAB multiplexes, on the frequencies that currently carry Radio Aire (Leeds multiplex) and Pulse (Bradford & Huddersfield multiplex). Heart is available in stereo on the Leeds multiplex and in mono on the Bradford & Huddersfield multiplex.
  • Smooth is available on the Leeds local DAB multiplex, on the same DAB frequency as Radio Aire.
  • Radio Yorkshire is available on the Bradford & Huddersfield local DAB multiplex.
  • Gold, XFM and UCB Gospel and Inspirational are no longer carried on DAB in the local area.
