BBC Red Button details for Glastonbury and Wimbledon 2015

The BBC has confirmed details of how to access extra coverage from Glastonbury and Wimbledon via the broadcaster's Red Button service.

There will be three Red Button options during Glastonbury and six Red Button options for Wimbledon, plus an HD Red Button service on cable and satellite during Wimbledon.

Here's where you'll find coverage:
  • Viewers with Red Button+ will be able to gain access to extra coverage via the red button. Details below.
  • Freeview HD: Everyone who can receive BBC One HD on channel 101 can receive BBC RB2 and BBC RB3 on channels 602 and 603, although a retune may be required. Viewers without Freeview HD will still receive BBC RB1 on channel 601.

Explaining why Freeview viewers with standard definition receivers will not receive extra coverage, Kieran Clifton, Director of Distribution at the BBC said:
"Unfortunately, there is no Freeview capacity available meaning we’re unable to offer more than the one existing Red Button stream to viewers with SD-only equipment. However, we’re pleased to be able to offer two extra Red Button streams to viewers with a Freeview HD TV or set-top box or a YouView set-top box. I should note that although a Freeview HD compatible receiver is required, these additional streams will be in SD."

On Sky, the availability of BBC Red Button streams directly accessed by a channel number appears to be restricted by Sky's limit of standard definition channel slots available on its Electronic Programme Guide (EPG). Broadcasters have to trade EPG slots, and the availability of slots depends on current supply, for example if another channel has ceased broadcasting. As it stands, BBC RB 4, 5 and 6 will be available on Sky via the red button only, and not available for direct selection.

Even more coverage with Red Button+
Viewers with access to Red Button+, the BBC's connected Red Button service, will be able to watch extra coverage from Glastonbury after 9pm each evening, with six streams of coverage available. For Wimbledon, up to 15 live HD video streams - up from 12 last year - will be available, providing more choice during the busy early rounds.

Red Button+ is available on selected Freeview HD smart TVs, on YouView and via Virgin Media's TiVO service and is delivered via broadband internet. Usage of the service will count towards any data caps, unless you have an unlimited broadband product.
