ITV expands channel into Africa

UK TV ABROAD | ITV's international channel ITV Choice is expanding into Africa from 5th May, following an agreement with African pay TV operator DStv.

The channel, previously known as ITV Granada -  not to be confused with the regional channel for the English north-west - has until now only been available in parts of Asia, the Middle East and Malta via various pay TV operators. In Africa, it will appear on DStv channel 123.

It offers subscribers in these territories access to top British TV shows, including current episodes of ITV favourites Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway and The Jonathan Ross Show alongside content from other UK broadcasters, which will include the current BBC adaptation of Poldark.

In Europe, ITV Choice is only available in Malta, although in some expat communities there is demand for a replacement to ITV following the reduction of the main UK channel's satellite footprint in 2014 when all major UK free-to-air TV services switched to Astra 2E. In Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, Gibraltar, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Spain, viewers can access a limited range of ITV programmes via the ITV Essentials internet subscription service, which currently includes Coronation Street, Emmerdale, TOWIE, Loose Women, Jeremy Kyle and a small selection of drama series.
