Freeview Channel Updates: February 2015

Freeview started February with changes to the ITV service delivered to viewers in the former Central South region, and some viewers may need to retune.

LBC and Classic FM joined Freeview.

By the end of the month, local TV launched in Birmingham and the Black Country on Freeview channel 8.

Whatever else happens will be recorded on this page during the month.

Help and advice
You can check which Freeview channels should be available in your area on the official Digital UK postcode checker. The channels that you will be able to receive is also dependent on the state of your aerial, cabling and the type of receiver you use.

Local TV

Local TV stations coming soon on Freeview and YouView channel 8 in England and Northern Ireland, or channel 23 in Scotland and Wales
Local TV is carried on Freeview via a multiplex which carries a local TV service, plus two slots for commercial broadcasters.

Services recently licensed to broadcast on Freeview, but not on-air:
Unlike the services listed in the coming soon section, there's no further news about these channels on Freeview:

Multiplex capacity
Available multiplex capacity provides an early indication of whether there is any bandwidth available for any new Freeview channels without closing others down.

  • There is currently unused capacity on the BBC-B multiplex, enough for one further HD channel. BBC-B carries channels including BBC One HD, Channel 4 HD and Film4+1. The BBC's proposals for BBC Three indicate that some of this capacity will be used for BBC One+1.

CLARIFICATION:
In January 2015's Freeview Channel Updates, a516digital noted that Ofcom had created two licences for connected Freeview TV service Vision TV. It has been pointed out that this is due to Ofcom's internal systems not coping with the number of individual streamed services contained in the Vision TV licence for its service on channel 244, and does not mean that Vision TV will split over two channels. The reference to this has been removed from the January Freeview Channel Updates page.
