[ARCHIVE] DTT Multiplex Capacity Guide

This page shows how the digital terrestrial television service is broadcast in the UK. Channels are bundled into multiplexes and then broadcast on their allocated frequencies and transmitters.

Some multiplexes cover almost all of the UK, while commercial and local multiplexes have lower overall coverage, thus not everyone can get the full range of the channels.

The following visualises how each multiplex is made up, and how services share bandwidth. You'll also find this information handy if you're missing certain Freeview channels, as it will reveal which multiplexes you can't receive.

Multiplexes can be set up in different ways, meaning they can have different amounts of bandwidth and can carry different numbers of channels. Sometimes there is a trade-off between bandwidth and coverage. HD channels take more bandwidth than SD channels, so fewer HD channels fit on a multiplex, even though HD multiplexes have more bandwidth.

Please note that the page is for personal reference only and is based on snapshots of the multiplexes as received via a normal TV aerial.
