Local DAB roll-out: expanded coverage - transmitter list

Between March 2015 and September 2016, local DAB digital radio coverage will be boosted to cover around 90% of UK homes and many more miles of on-road coverage.

It will boost coverage of BBC local radio in England, BBC Radio Wales and Cymru in Wales, BBC Radio Scotland and nan Gaidhael in Scotland and BBC Radio Ulster in Northern Ireland alongside commercial stations including Heart, Capital and Smooth.

The agreement will allow 5 new DAB transmitters to launch bringing local DAB to Suffolk for the first time.

Outlined below are the changes planned for each local DAB multiplex affected by the plans.
  • "Modifications" are transmitters that will need be changed in order to improve coverage and reduce co-channel interference to other services on the same frequency.
  • "Step 1" are new transmitters being brought into service up to September 2016. The DCMS document that contained this list also included sites like Oliver's Mount in Scarborough that have in fact already gone on-air with their local DAB multiplex.
  • "Step 2" transmitters will be brought in to service if the Government announces a Digital Radio Switchover date. In Lincolnshire, step 2 transmitters will only be brought into service if the BBC and the biggest local commercial station Lincs FM take 50% of the available capacity on the multiplex.

The non-legally binding agreement between the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the BBC, Arqiva and local DAB multiplex operators funds the roll-out to match the FM equivalent coverage of the largest commercial local radio station in each area.

This means that there would still be coverage holes if Digital Radio Switchover went ahead - for example, in Derbyshire, the largest commercial local radio station would be Capital Derbyshire. However BBC Radio Derby has a greater editorial coverage area and greater FM coverage into the county than Capital. As it stands, unless Buxton's transmitter is added, it would be left without BBC Local Radio at switchover. Realistically, more transmitters would be required wherever in the UK the BBC's local stations cover a larger area than their local commercial counterparts.

  1. Very disappointing when compared with the Ofcom / Arqiva Digital Switchover (DSO) Programme plans from 2011. Many of the less densely populated areas now appear to have been abandoned. There also seems to be less of an attempt to match coverage to editorial areas, relying on overspill from adjacent editorial areas to fill the gaps.
