Now TV offers Sky for the equivalent of a fiver a month

Now TV has launched a set of gift vouchers that can be used by both new and existing Now TV customers in order to access Sky's main TV channels for as little as £5 a month for up to five months.

It comes as Sky pushes Now TV to households with Freeview or Freesat and a preferably unlimited broadband connection of at least 2.5 Mbps, who don't mind paying a small amount for some of the pay TV giant's premium channels.

Cynics point to the recent press reports highlighting the number of repeats scheduled on the main TV channels at Christmas as making services like Now TV sound like an interesting alternative - despite most pay TV channels also dedicating much of their schedules to repeats, although going in Now TV's favour is that previously non-Sky viewers may not have seen repeated programming before.

This month, Now TV will stream new movies including The Lego Movie and Frozen and Entertainment Pass holders will be able to watch Game of Thrones from the beginning on Sky Atlantic. Classic and contemporary drama is available on ITV's relatively new drama channel ITV Encore, which joined Now TV in September.

Vouchers
Discounted access to Now TV is available through vouchers available at Argos, Currys, Game (as a printed till voucher or as a digital download code from the website) and PC World. A three month Now TV Entertainment Pass voucher is available for £15. Alternatively, a five month Entertainment Pass voucher is available for £25, both the equivalent of £5 a month for live and on demand access to programmes from 13 channels including Sky 1, Sky Living, Sky Atlantic, Gold, ITV Encore and MTV.

Similar offers are available for the service's movie and sport passes: a two month movie pass will cost £15; a three month pass is slightly less value for money at £25. A one week sports pass is available for £10 - or 99p less than the current Sky Sports weekly pass price. Details of which services are available under each pass are listed below.

There's no obligation to continue subscribing after the voucher periods have expired, but Now TV does require new customers to create an account with their payment details when they first access the service. The entertainment and movie passes will auto-renew at the end of the voucher period using the payment details provided on account set-up, unless it is cancelled beforehand. Sports passes do not auto-renew. Thereafter, customers can opt to either keep their service running, cancel or cancel temporarily and reactivate at a later time. Customers need to be 18 or over to be a Now TV account holder.

The voucher is redeemed on the Now TV website, where customers can check the current terms and conditions of the offer.

Devices
The full Now TV service is available on a number of devices; prominently via their own budget "Now TV box" or via devices including Roku, PS3, Apple TV and Chromecast. The services are streamed in '720p' - less than Sky HD, but usually resulting in a higher picture quality than many standard definition broadcasts.

Drawbacks
The service hasn't been without flaws - earlier this year Now TV had to apologise when on a number of occasions, such as during the last series of Game of Thrones and the final weekend of the 2013-14 football season, demand for the service caused viewers to see blank screens. A small number of programmes are not available on Now TV due to broadcast rights restrictions.

  1. It's Sky without the channels you don't want at a price which isn't a rip-off.
