Local DAB in Derbyshire has coverage boost

Local DAB digital radio coverage in Derbyshire and East Staffordshire has been boosted following the addition of a second transmitter serving the area.

From today, the Lichfield transmitter, near Hints in Staffordshire is broadcasting the Derbyshire local DAB multiplex carrying BBC Radio Derby, Capital FM, Gold-Derbyshire, Heart, Gem 106 and Smooth (East Midlands). The multiplex is operated by Now Digital East Midlands.

The signal from the transmitter is primarily beamed north-eastwards, adding another 200,000 people in South Derbyshire and East Staffordshire, including Burton-upon-Trent and Swadlincote into the coverage area.

Local DAB for Derbyshire was originally launched in July 2014 and has until now only been available to listeners mostly within a 5-10 mile radius of the transmitter based at Quarndon.

A further transmitter serving Matlock and Bakewell from Stanton Moor is planned, but the editorial area of the Derbyshire DAB service no longer covers Chesterfield, which comes under South Yorkshire's DAB service.
