YouView adds BBC's Connected Red Button on some boxes

Now added to some YouView boxes
Some YouView users will be able to make use of the BBC's Connected Red Button and revised BBC iPlayer following the release of a new automatic software update.

But the update does mean the end of the line for radio via the TV iPlayer, following similar developments on other platforms and smart TV services earlier in the year.

The update is being made available on YouView Humax set-top boxes bought from retail outlets and on YouView from BT. According to YouView, this is phased roll-out, which will take a few weeks to reach all boxes.

The Connected Red Button is available on the BBC's standard definition channels on YouView. The service essentially brings the content that is available on the BBC's News, Sport, Weather and iPlayer smart TV apps together under one banner. As part of the upgrade, viewers will be able to access the new BBC iPlayer interface - but now without radio, in line with changes that have been rolled out by the BBC across all platforms.

Also included in the update is a feature to give visually impaired users the opportunity to provide audio feedback plus fixes to various bugs which are listed on this official YouView page.

The roll-out of the Connected Red Button beyond its original platform - TiVo - was announced at the end of last year and is now available on a slowly growing selection of smart TV devices.

There was disappointment when the Connected Red Button failed to launch on YouView in time for this year's major summer sporting events and a few cross user comments on a516digital, which left viewers without access to the additional BBC streams carried via the connected TV service. BT originally indicated that they would have the new Red Button services for the summer.

Now though, at least for some YouView viewers, the waiting is over and they can look forward to accessing additional sport and Glastonbury coverage in 2015 and the enhanced Red Button interface right now.

    1. Yes. It's easy to knock YouView for taking a little longer than once expected, but Sky is falling behind on this and other recent developments in the connected TV market.

  2. Yes once Sky have it all platforms will essentially have it, even if not all freeview receivers have it yet or all freesat receivers for that matter, but both of those platforms have it in some form with views of expanding it at least.

    1. As per the article above.

There is no BBC Red Button on HD on Freeview HD yet. (YouView piggybacks on the Freeview HD signal).
