Quick Guide: NOW TV

Freeview viewers can add the main Sky entertainment, movie and sports channels via the NOW TV service from Sky without an ongoing contract. Prices start from £6.99 a month for the main Sky entertainment channels.

The service works by offering access to the main Sky TV channels via your broadband internet connection to a number of compatible devices, including games consoles, smartphones, smart TVs or a small palm-sized box.

A connection of at least 2.5 Mbps is required, and ideally an unlimited service, as usage will otherwise count towards your usage cap.

What's available on NOW TV?
Unlike Sky, you don't need to sign up for a lengthy contract. Rather, for entertainment channels you can buy a monthly pass; for sport there's either 1 or 7 day passes and for movies there's a separate monthly pass.

The passes are as follows - you can choose which ones you want:
  • Entertainment Month Pass: access to channels including Sky 1, Sky Living, Sky Atlantic, Comedy Central, Nick, Nick Jr, Disney, ITV Encore, GOLD, Discovery, plus box sets of popular Sky TV shows available on-demand.  £6.99 a month from 16/10/2014
  • Sky Movies Month Pass: access to Sky Movie channels - live or on-demand £9.99 a month from 16/10/2014
  • Sky Sports Day Pass: 1 day access to Sky Sports 1,2,3,4,5, F1, Sky Sports News HQ* Regular price £9.99 per day.
  • Sky Sports Week Pass: 7 day access to Sky Sports 1,2,3,4,5, F1, Sky Sport News HQ* NEW Introductory price £10.99 per week.

* Entertainment and Movie Month Pass subscribers with a NOW TV Box can also access Sky Sports News HQ via the dedicated app as described on the NOW TV website.

Some programmes on the entertainment channels have to be blanked out due to rights reasons. Details of such programmes are listed at www.nowtv.com/slating

What do you need to get the service?
The easiest way to get NOW TV is using a NOW TV Box, available for £9.99. It's a palm-sized device that connects to your internet connection using an ethernet cable and your TV via an HDMI connection. In addition to getting the above services via a NOW TV Box you also can access apps including BBC iPlayer and YouTube.

Alternatively, you can get a Roku box, although these generally cost more. Although NOW TV Boxes are made by Roku (after Sky made substantial investments into the streaming device company), not all apps on Roku, including Netflix, are available on the NOW TV Box.

You can also get NOW TV on a number of other devices. The NOW TV website has full details - note that on some devices not all functions are available. See http://help.nowtv.com/article/Supported-devices
