10 things to know about the "Digital 2" DAB multiplex

10 things to know about "Digital 2", the second national commercial DAB digital radio multiplex:
  1. The new multiplex will use VHF Block 11A (216.928 MHz).
  2. The licence to operate the multiplex will be for a duration of 12 years.
  3. A maximum of 30% of the multiplex's capacity can be used by "DAB+" services, a new standard for digital radio this is already being adopted in other countries. Some in the radio industry objected to Ofcom capping the percentage of multiplex capacity to be used for DAB+ in a recent consultation.
  4. A maximum of 70% of the multiplex's capacity must be used for radio stations, the rest could be used for data or even mobile TV services.
  5. Encrypted or "pay radio" services are permitted.
  6. The applicants for the licence will need to outline how they intend to promote digital radio take-up if they win the multiplex licence.
  7. Ofcom expects applicants "to recognise when making  their coverage proposals that this licence is for a national radio multiplex service designed to cover as much of the UK as is reasonably practicable". However, Ofcom does not intend to determine a specific minimum level of coverage.
  8. Coverage in parts of East Anglia, Kent and along parts of the South Coast is likely to be limited, due to international agreements designed to avoid interference from neighbouring countries on the same frequency.
  9. Stations planned for the new multiplex must "Appeal to a variety of tastes and interests"
  10. The following transmitter sites are cleared for use on VHF Block 11A for the second national multiplex. Not all of them have to be used by the winning applicant:
