BBC local radio spotted testing on Freeview in West Midlands

Tests have been spotted on Freeview in the West Midlands, with local radio station BBC WM appearing as a hidden stream on the BBC's standard definition TV multiplex broadcast via the Sutton Coldfield transmitter and its relays.

This is believed to be the first time that BBC local radio in England has been seen on the digital terrestrial television service; a service that already includes BBC national radio.

The test is hidden from most Freeview receivers. It is a 96 Kbps stream, labelled "6149". Digital Spy forum member Richjj1978 spotted the test and listened to BBC WM this morning on an old Sagem PVR, but could not tune the stream in on any other Freeview device.

BBC radio stations for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are already carried on Freeview channels 719 and 720 in their respective nations.

Providing every BBC local radio on Freeview in England would be complex: most main transmitter sites cover an area that contains several BBC local radio station areas.

The BBC's plans regarding local radio in England are currently unknown.

  2. OK Brian, but looking at the nations PSB1 there seems to be only two vacant audio stream in England. Therefore, presumably only two streams at 96kbps is the only way to transmit BBC local radio? I can't see West Midlands PSB1 variant working, other than defining it separately at each Tx site such as The Wrekin, Sutton Coldfield and Ridge Hill. That means re-engineering PSB1?

If at all possible to have BBC local radio stations on LCN 719 and 720 too.

It could be possible to be done via Connected Red Button, without being reliant on each transmitted area and provide all streams across England even the UK?

  3. Do we have any kind of figures for radio listening via Freeview and TV in general. I'd have thought most people interested in radio would listen through a.. well, radio - and if using other devices more likely to use the net than their TV. And while those who found 6Music/Sport Extra etc through the TV would surely have invested by now in a digital radio if they listened regularly.

Indeed is having radio on digital TV holding back digital radio?
