Freeview Channel Updates: January 2014

On this page, we track changes to the Freeview / digital terrestrial television service in the UK during the month of January 2014.

ITV has been enhancing the presence of its +1 channels, with new hours for itv3+1 and itv4+1 joining the platform. January also saw the launch of the first foreign language channel outside of Manchester to broadcast on Freeview: Al Jazeera Arabic on channel 84. (Lamhe is the other foreign language channel available in Manchester on Freeview.)

To watch Al Jazeera Arabic, you'll need a TV, PVR or set-top-box with Freeview HD certification, and be in an area where BBC Four HD and Al Jazeera HD are available, as it's on the new "COM7" multiplex of channels, which covers around 50% of UK homes, rising to 70% by June 2014.

Find out more about where and when these new HD channels will be available  >

What's changed so far?
Where there is more than one channel update, the most recent will be listed first. Channel updates will usually appear here within 24 hours of the change. Services in yellow require a TV, PVR or set-top-box that supports DVB-T2/Freeview HD.

  1. Swapping itv3+1 and The Store around is a better mix for the itv viewer as itv3+1 users in the evening have the option to timeshift.

From January 28th what is broadcasting between 04:00 and 06:00! - the slot end up being rented out. Any broadcaster can apply buy a hour or two slot and use Connected Red Button to bring upto 24/7 access many a service does it now!

QVC it might be beneficent to move the QVC Connected Red Button from 35 to 16
Al Jazeera might want to experiment with Connected Red Button platform like its rival RT (Russia Today). AJE might want to bring the Arabic channel UK wide via an CRB service on 83 and maybe be a test case for streamed HD tests as not every urban centre will have COM7 and COM8.

Majority of Bristol is one clear example where COM7/8 will not be available as it has despite it has Full Freeview Service for most broadcast is recieved through a relay!

    1. The 2 hour gap does raise a few questions along with the fact that former Top Up TV capacity hasn't yet been reallocated. As the changes to ITV3+1 and The Store take place and Channel 5+24 starts broadcasting, the situation will, perhaps, become clearer.

QVC on 16 already has QVC Active, coding this to work on all receivers and CRB to work only on selected receivers would be problematic. I suppose this could change if and when QVC remove QVC Active.

  2. The 4am to 6am slot has been filled by ITV4+1 which usually carries The Store during those hours.
