BBC suspends surround sound on some HD services

Following problems with sound glitches on BBC HD channels, first reported here last week, the BBC has issued a statement confirming that 5.1. surround sound has been suspended on some of its HD services.

The BBC confirms: "We are aware that there have been a number of reports of audio glitches on some BBC HD services. The fault is only affecting programmes broadcast with surround sound audio. As a precaution, while this fault is under investigation, some of the BBC HD services will only be available in Dolby 2.0 stereo until this is resolved."

Since this article was first published, a516digital has been contacted by a number of users via social media, who have singled out BBC Four HD with the problem.

  1. I've noticed this too, in plain stereo, from the TV

  3. Definitely not just programmes broadcast in 5.1, it also affected programmes in stereo on BBC Three. Family Guy and American Dad having sound dropouts around every 44 minutes.

I have noticed that since this statement has been released, the sound dropouts have stopped occurring on BBC Three HD (and assuming, other programmes), but has stared occuring on BBC One HD this afternoon, whether in 5.1 or stereo. Hopefully that's just testing and not the problem spreading to other channels.

  4. Not noticed this until today, but BBC1 HD badly affected by said glitches. As far as I know it's the only channel thus affected. It became too irritating to watch.
