Freeview Channel Updates: October 2013

Sky Text closed 30/10/2013, leaving this caption.
During October, the digital terrestrial TV service prepared for more HD channels on Freeview and bid farewell to Top Up TV.

Top Up TV closed at the stroke of midnight into 31st October, with all of its services taken off the SDN multiplex during the course of the day. Services included GOLD and Home, the last remnants of Top Up TV's linear service, first launched in 2004.

The BBC has switched on placeholders for BBC Three HD and CBBC HD well in advance of their expected launch in December, while QVC Beauty has extended hours - meaning that multiplex operator Arqiva is now transmitting 13 simultaneous TV channels on its second multiplex. Meanwhile, ITV and JML opened The Store on the 1st October.

itv3+1 first appeared on the 15th October 2013, with an Ofcom licence to transmit on the platform issued the same day. Following in the footsteps of Dave Ja Vu, itv3+1 is only available at night, using bandwidth that was previously used by The Store's gambling slot after 1am.

On the 30th October, Sky's teletext service Sky Text ceased, with viewers referred to the individual Sky channels on Freeview and their websites.

This month's updates to the Freeview service, with the most recent changes first:

Looking ahead:
  • At the end of this month, Top Up TV will close down.
  • Further details about the additional Freeview HD multiplex roll-out will also be announced shortly, with many larger cities expected to be in line to get what a516digital refers to as "Freeview HD Extra" before the end of 2013.
  • In November, BBC Red Button HD will bow out with 3D coverage of the 50th anniversary special of Doctor Who. BBC Three HD is expected to begin testing and go live shortly thereafter in conjunction with the roll-out of the "Freeview HD extra" service. (Update: 15/10/2013: Placeholders now available - see above)
  • Streaming service VuTV will launch on Freeview channel 238 via compatible connected Freeview HD devices.
  • Comux will launch the first local TV multiplex in November from the Belmont transmitter as Grimsby's Estuary TV becomes the first local TV station to launch on Freeview channel 8. More about local TV >

    1. Hi. London Live is scheduled to hit their airwaves in March 2014. They've been busy recruiting and commissioning ahead of the launch on Freeview channel 8.

  3. That's a matter of opinion - in this house we watch about 100 times as much CBBC as Channel 5.

  4. What's going on with the Playboy channel (LCN 181?)

According to their Twitter feed it's being called 'Freeview Interactive Channel 181'...does that mean iptv I wonder?

I don't really take much interest in the adult stuff but presumably if it does go through the internet it's not taking up any space as such on Freeview.

I get the impression from what they say that it's up and running but it's on too late for me to check it out.

Do you have any info on this channel please?

    2. The actual caption on 181 reads "coming soon", but channel 181's internet service is a streamed service operated by Synapse TV, the company that's preparing to launch VuTV, according to the Ofcom licence list. a516digital's Freeview channel list shows the channel as an IPTV service. Unlike other "streamed channels", available on channel 225 onward, adult streamed services have to remain in the adult channel zone.
