Non-Freesat channel highlights: Channel 3 regions

Non-Freesat mode on Freesat receivers enables you to get more from satellite TV.

In a series of articles, a516digital highlights what's available in non-Freesat mode.

Regional ITV/STV/UTV
Unlike BBC regions, ITV/STV/UTV regions are not all included in the Freesat Electronic Programme Guide (EPG). Some of this is political and commercial - ITV would not want STV to be widely available in its franchise regions, UTV probably would not want ITV accessed easily in its licence area. Using non-Freesat mode, you can access whichever "Channel 3" region you like.

Unfortunately, most ITV regions are now simply labelled "ITV", so if your satellite receiver can't tell you the SID number for the channel and your receiver does not provide you with a 7 day EPG for the service, you will need to wait until the next regional news bulletin to find out what you have.

If you're interested in receiving a particular region, you can use this guide (correct as at 01/04/2013) to find the transponder that carries the region you want.

  • You'll need the first line of data (in a light blue background) when using non-Freesat mode to scan the relevant transponder. Non-Freesat mode is usually available in the menu, often under "set-up, system or installation" options. Consult your manual for more options. For details of how to use non-Freesat mode on Humax and Manhattan receivers, please click here and scroll to the bottom section, entitled "how do I go into non-Freesat mode".
  • All listings on this page assume you are using a satellite dish pointed at 28 degrees East to receive the regular Freesat service. All services use a UK spotbeam, which restricts viewing in continental Europe beyond the Low Countries and France.

  • STV HD and STV+1 are currently broadcasting on satellite, but do not currently appear in the Electronic Programme Guides (EPG) of either Sky or Freesat. No date has been given as to when the channels might be added to the EPGs of Scottish viewers.
  • UTV HD is expected on the Sky and Freesat EPG in the next three months (according to the most recent info - subject to change).
