Ofcom starts process to add more Local TV channels

Ofcom has started the process of getting up to 30 more local TV services on air across the UK ahead of a planned second phase of local TV licensing.

It has today invited interested parties to express their interest in being part of the second phase of local TV stations, which will join the 19 stations already licensed.

Ofcom's plans were first revealed on the 28th January, when it awarded the licence to run the local TV multiplex (on which Local TV services will be carried) to Comux UK.

Potential local TV operators have until 24th April to register their interest with Ofcom. In locations where there is interest, Ofcom will consider the expressions of interest and will announce later this year how the next licensing round will proceed.

Where no expressions of interest are received, there will be no future local TV service.

Phase 2 stations are to be on air on Freeview by the end of 2014.
